Reported to be based on the Baleno’s lightweight platform.
Car and Bike reports that Suzuki will make India the production hub for the next generation Suzuki Jimny. It could be launched in markets like Brazil, Indonesia and Europe before the end of the decade.
The Jimny could be launched in markets like Brazil, Indonesia and Europe before the end of the decade.
Suzuki’s tough-as-teeth SUV will be based on the Maruti Baleno‘s lightweight platform, offering significant weight savings that could be beneficial when traversing mucky terrain. It will continue to offer the characteristic 4×4 drivetrain, but could be powered by the 112 PS 1.0L Boosterjet engine from the export-spec Maruti Baleno.
Given that a 3-door mini SUV is a niche in the Indian market, Maruti is likely to introduce the Jimny as an extended, 4-door version in India, should the manufacturer consider a launch. As the Jimny name would be new to regular car buyers, Maruti could consider launching it as a long-time successor to the iconic Gypsy to garner attention. Like the Maruti Vitara Brezza, it can be sold as a sub-4m SUV, competing against the likes of the Mahindra TUV300.

Likely to be located closer to Hyundai India’s plant.
According to Reuters, Kia Motors will finalize a location for their first production plant in India next month. Reports suggest that it will be located in Andhra Pradesh, so as to have a close proximity with sister brand Hyundai’s plant located in the outskirts of Chennai.
One likely product Kia could consider for India is the Picanto, which is based on the Hyundai i10.
Operations are expected to commence in 2019, and the plant will be capable of producing 300,000 vehicles a year. Kia’s products for India would share platforms with Hyundai’s established models, which are almost fully localized in the market.
Other than working on local production, Kia will also develop independent retail network and strategies, rather than leveraging on sister brand Hyundai’s wide dealership network. This will help Kia establish a distinct brand identity, similar to the likes of Nissan and Renault’s relationship.

With the 1.9-liter engine, Isuzu can sell the MU-X in Delhi-NCR where there’s a ban on diesel engines displacing more than 2,000cc.
