Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed to repatriate the 650,000 refugees who have fled violence in Rakhine state within two years. Many are concerned – and rightly soThe 650,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees who have fled what the UN human rights chief has called “a textbook case of ethnic cleansing” must have the right to return to their homes in northern Rakhine state, Myanmar. To say otherwise would be to concede to those who forced them out – the security forces and militias who have raped and beaten civilians, burned houses and killed even infants. Authorities say the campaign is directed against militants who attacked police, but the civilian toll speaks for itself. Despite this, some of the Rohingya now living in wretched conditions across the border in Bangladesh have said they wish to go back.It is equally clear that refugees must not be forced to return. Many more of them, according to NGOs supporting them, are determined never to go back or are terrified of doing so without guarantees of their security, property, livelihoods and freedom of movement. Some were persuaded to return after escaping previous waves of violence, only to find their lives in peril again. Previous episodes of displacement and return “do not inspire confidence”, the House of Commons international development committee has warned, noting the failure to consult refugees and expressing its grave concerns about plans to send them back. Report slams lack of action over ethnic cleansing and asks why more sexual violence experts have not been sent to areaInternational plans for the potential return of 100,000 Rohingya to Myanmar without a clear understanding of their legal status, destination or willingness to return represent a grave risk, a select committee has warned. In a tough report questioning the UK government’s strategy towards the military regime in Myanmar, the all-party international development select committee challenged ministers to “reflect on why so much evidence of discrimination, marginalisation and abuse of the Rohingya people in Myanmar was seemingly ignored for so long, rather than translated into effective action by the international community”. Related: World's awkward silence over Rohingya genocide warnings The Rohingya are Muslims who live in majority-Buddhist Myanmar. They are often described as "the world's most persecuted minority". Tata has released a teaser video in which it provides hints of the models that it will bring to the Auto Expo 2018. In the video, three cars are visible under wraps, though which models will be exhibited have not yet been revealed.
However, as we had reported earlier, the Indian carmaker is expected to bring its new Baleno and i20 rival, codenamed X451, and its five- and seven-seat rival to the Creta and Compass, codenamed the H5. Along with these two near-production models, Tata is also expected to showcase its capabilities and mobility solutions aimed at smart cities.
While many manufacturers are staying away from the Expo, Tata seems to be pulling out all stops to maximise their participation. Here’s what you can expected at Tata’s stall in the 2018 Auto Expo:
Based on Tata Motors’ new Advanced Modular Platform (AMP), the X451 will slot in above the Tiago in the carmaker’s line-up. Tata’s new design language, called Impact Design 2.0, will feature on the model, along with uprated versions of the Tiago’s 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.05-litre diesel motor. The Nexon’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine may also feature at a later date. Expect a launch date for the model sometime in 2019.
Underpinned by the Land Rover Discovery Sport’s L550 platform, the production-spec H5 will be available as a five- and seven-seater. Powered by FCA’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder MultiJet II diesel engine, the five-seater will have it in a 140hp state of tune, while the seven-seater will get it in a 170hp tune. Expect the pricing to undercut the Jeep Compass and even Hyundai’s Creta.
Tata’s display at the Auto Expo will include 26 smart mobility solutions across its passenger and commercial vehicles. The brand’s Smart Mobility pavilion will be split into interactive zones like Residential zone, Sports zone, Smart Energy zone, and Inter and Intracity zones. Each zone, with its digital engagements around the product exhibits, is expected to provide Auto Expo audiences an engaging experience across the pavilion.
